Before you read below, take a breath and a pause…I would love to hear from you! How are you doing?

Most people think their North Star is a goal. Success. Getting married. Having kids. Building a business. Writing the book. Buying the house. Finally arriving at some future destination where they believe they will feel fulfilled, peaceful, or enough. We mix the North Star that guides us with our goals.

I understand that because I spent years chasing goals myself. Much of my life was driven by achievement, accomplishment, and striving toward the next thing. When I finally, after 21 years, got the “VP” title, I thought I had made it, but had I really? There was more pressure, more work, and more expectations inside of me and also from others. While goals can absolutely be beautiful and meaningful, I’ve come to realize something deeper over the years: those things are not actually the North Star. They are experiences. They are part of the journey, but they are not the deeper compass guiding our lives.

The real North Star is much simpler and much more profound. It’s a question we can ask ourselves over and over throughout the day in every interaction, every meeting, every decision, every conversation, every email, every response:

Am I coming from love?

Because when we are not coming from love, we are almost always coming from fear in one of its many disguises.

Fear rarely walks into the room announcing itself. It shows up as worry, control, anger, judgment, defensiveness, scarcity, people pleasing, proving ourselves, or the need to be right. Fear wears many costumes, and most of us don’t realize when we’ve slipped into it. Trust me, I have slipped into all of these variations very unconsciously for most of my life!

In the Energy Leadership work I love to share, love, compassion, openness, trust, curiosity, and responsibility live above the line. Fear in all its forms lives below it. The interesting thing is that most people think they are simply stressed, busy, or trying to manage a situation when in reality, they are operating from fear energy underneath it all.

I catch this in myself all the time. If I am rushing, trying to control an outcome, irritated at someone, worrying excessively, or grasping for certainty, I know I have drifted away from my own North Star. The beautiful thing is that awareness allows me to return. Not perfectly and not instantly, but consciously. It’s getting behind the north star to clearly see where the intention is coming from that shows you if you are coming from love or fear.

Imagine if, before every important conversation, we paused and asked ourselves, Am I coming from love right now? Do you want to get the person on the otherside to see your point of view and do what you desire in a kind and loving way with curiosity or, using command and control and manipulation. Be honest here- we all slip sometimes!

Your North Star is not outside of you. It isn’t waiting somewhere in the future once you finally achieve enough. It is the energy from which you choose to live your life right now. The practice is simply this: pause more often, notice your energy, and gently ask yourself:

Am I coming from love?

Your energy is your currency.

It’s what you bring into every meeting, every conversation, every relationship, every room you walk into. People feel it whether you realize it or not. Your family feels it. Your team feels it. Your clients feel it.

Most are completely unaware of the energy we are transmitting.

After doing this work for almost nine years and walking hundreds of individuals and teams through the Energy Leadership Index assessment, I can tell you this with complete certainty: energy matters more than most people realize.

The assessment is powerful because it acts like a mirror. It helps people see how they are actually showing up under stress and in everyday life. Sometimes people are humbled by what they see. Sometimes they resist it or even get angry because the truth can feel uncomfortable when we are confronted with our own patterns. But then there are those beautiful moments. The moments when someone pauses and asks,

“Okay… so how do I shift my energy?”

That’s when the door opens to awareness.

Once we become aware of our energy, we gain the ability to consciously choose how we want to show up rather than operating on autopilot. Most people are unaware of their energy because it lives in the unconscious—in hidden patterns, conditioned reactions, assumptions, and stories we have repeated for years. We can’t always see it ourselves. But when we become open to the truth and genuinely curious about knowing ourselves more deeply, everything begins to shift.

To me, this is the real work of leadership.

Not controlling others or managing appearances but learning to lead yourself first.

Because your energy is everywhere.

It impacts your communication, your relationships, your ability to collaborate, your creativity, your health, and even the results you create in your life.

And the beautiful thing is… energy is not fixed.

Many people are familiar with assessments like Myers-Briggs or DISC, and I appreciate both (I’m certified in them as well). But those tools primarily measure personality and communication styles, which tend to remain relatively stable over time.

Energy is different because it can shift moment by moment, which means your experience of life can shift too.

The real question is: Are you paying attention to the energy you are bringing into your life today?

During one of my 1:1 sessions with Allegra, my writing mentor, she asked me about fear. She helped me explore looking at fear in a new way.

Most of us avoid fear—it’s natural. Who wants to be scared or get hurt? Not many. But I have done many things in my life that I was scared to death to do, and Allegra asked me why. I couldn’t answer her clearly. I wasn’t sure.

So here we are… exploring fear.

The next day, they had the whole group write about fear—an irrational fear (and in my opinion, most are). And the truth is, it was wildly uncomfortable to dive into it, live into it, feel into it.

Then I found myself asking, Do I really want to write a book about overcoming fear if I’m going to feel like this while writing it? But maybe that’s the point.

Then, when I read it out loud, they suggested I post it. “You mean in public… on my Substack platform?” Yes. Exactly, they said.

So here it is… I’m typing it here as is with its imperfection.

I’ll let you know at the end if I have the same experience of living the fear I felt with this incident.

(Here is my original fear passage untouched below)

The fear is dark for sure, maybe so dark it consumes all of you from the pit in your stomach expanding out like a deep fiery red sensation that moves to the skin, that creeps, that tingles with spikey gloom and heightened awareness- a high alert. You know this feeling well. The feeling when you would walk in the door after school, grabbing the brass key in the back crevices of the corner statue, the piece on the left side of the door displaying a carving of an old mans face with furrower brow and deep wrinkles in his cheeks on one side of the stone statue and a young man on the other side with not a worry in the world, fresh with wonder. They guarded the front door and held the key that was hidden from plain sight - the family secret among many.

I put the key in the keyhole and paused, holding my breath and silently opening the door to the unknown- the unknown mood that may be waiting for me behind the door. Would she be angry and mad that I left the cereal bowl in the sink, or didn’t close the door all the way when I ran to get the bus, getting myself off to school alone in the morning like I always did at 7 years old? Would she be raving mad with spittle flying from her mouth, or would it be another mood- the happy one who wanted to go into town to get ice cream at Old Uncle Gaylord’s in the dark red brick building in downtown Mill Valley? My stomach turned as I pushed the heavy door open…silence. I was alone, and the dark fear dissolved in my body.

Yes—I felt the fear again, but this time less so. My body and nervous system are healing and no longer hijacked by the past, as they once were. And that, to me, is the real work, not eliminating fear but changing my relationship to it.

Fear lives in the body. It has an energy to it, an energy that can feel overwhelming, consuming, prickly, and at times completely out of our control. When we don’t understand it, we either avoid it, suppress it, or unconsciously let it run the show. But when we are willing to feel it, look at it, be with it, and more importantly, stay with it, we can allow it to move through us, and something begins to shift. The energy changes, and it no longer controls us. It’s a choice.

This is where awareness becomes powerful because the truth is, many of the decisions we make in our lives, personally and professionally, are driven by fear. Oftentimes, irrational fears like fear of judgment, failure. Being in trouble (my go-to), getting it wrong, for some, it’s being seen. They start with our thoughts and can take us down a rabbit hole- even the irrational ones because they feel so darn real!

But when we begin to recognize fear for what it is—energy moving through the body— energy in motion = emotion, then we create space.

You don’t have to eliminate it. You just don’t let it lead.

Be aware and choose, moment by moment, the energy you want to lead from.

They don’t disappear or get eradicated from our lives. They simply get tucked away—placed in the back of the closet, maybe in a dark, dusty corner.

But they’re still there.

Every now and then… we pull them back out. Some of these habits are small and familiar. Like reaching for the chocolate at 3:00 in the afternoon, or forgetting to drink water all day, or opening your inbox and letting 200 emails take over your entire nervous system.

We know these patterns. We’ve lived them.

Over time, we begin to see that they don’t serve us. Through mindfulness and self-awareness, we create space from them. We learn how to calm our system and respond rather than react, but that doesn’t mean they’re gone… they’re just waiting.

Sometimes, without even realizing it, we slip them back on like an old pair of dusty slippers because they are comfortable and familiar, and we go unconscious.

I noticed this recently on a hike today. The past few weeks have been full—traveling, speaking, coaching, writing, and of course, life layered in between. Bills, responsibilities, the day-to-day. And this day, I was in my favorite place on the trail, and I LOVE being near the river, yet my mind was spinning with looping thoughts and running to-do lists on repeat, creating a quiet sense of pressure building in my body. I even sat down by the water to pause, to breathe, but the momentum of my “tasks” kept pulling me.

And then I realized - this is an old habit, and I let it slip back in and take the steering wheel.

When I slowed down and got honest with myself, I saw that part of it is that my meditation practice hasn’t been as steady with this schedule. And instead of judging that, I simply acknowledged it. This is where I am right now.

But the deeper realization was this: This used to be my normal.

Running at that pace and living in that constant loop of doing and managing.

And I am 100% clear, I don’t want that anymore.

As I continued walking, I became curious and started to notice my thoughts: “Don’t forget this.“ Make sure you do that. I gave myself permission to simply notice the feeling in my body—a tightness in my gut, a subtle pressure in my chest — and instead of pushing it away, I recognized it. This is an old version of me.

Our bodies are always giving us information. That uncomfortable feeling wasn’t a problem. It was guidance showing me that I had picked up an old pattern again… an old way of being.

And in that awareness, something shifted; the second half of the hike felt different.

I stayed present. I used a simple phrase, a mantra, to bring myself back when my mind started to wander. Not perfectly, but consciously.

So if you find yourself slipping back into an old habit… an old way of thinking, reacting, or being, don’t beat yourself up. Realize that this is a well-worn or familiar way of being and then… let it go. Again and again and again if need be.

With awareness, you get to choose, and that is our personal power more than you realize.

There is a difference between knowing something and knowing it in your bones.

One is knowledge. It’s something you’ve been taught, something you’ve read, or something you can repeat back with confidence. It lives mostly in the mind and often comes with explanation and logic.

The other is something entirely different.

It’s lived. It’s felt. It’s embodied in a way that doesn’t require proof or validation. When you know something in your bones, there is no debate and no second-guessing. You don’t feel the need to convince yourself or anyone else, because the certainty is already there. It doesn’t come from the mind; it comes from somewhere much deeper- wisdom that we all have access to.

For a long time, I operated almost entirely from the first kind of knowing. I could learn quickly, perform well, say the right things, and follow a path that made sense on paper. In my corporate career, that served me. It helped me succeed and build a life that looked good from the outside. But there were moments, quieter ones, where something inside me didn’t feel fully aligned. At the time, I didn’t trust that feeling and ignored it for years, and I did what many of us do. I overrode it and kept moving forward.

One of the clearest examples for me was when I decided to step out of my corporate career. I lost my job, one that I truly loved, through an acquisition. I immediately had interviews, offers, and possibilities, but inside, something had shifted. It wasn’t loud or dramatic. It didn’t come with a fully formed plan or a neat explanation I could share with others. It was quiet, almost subtle, but it was steady and persistent. It was a knowing, not in my head, but in my body. It was time to leave the safety of a J.O.B and start my own business- I just knew it in my bones, and the key? I listened.

I remember trying to explain it to people and feeling like my words didn’t quite land. It didn’t make sense in a traditional way, and there were moments where I questioned myself and wondered if I was making the wrong decision. But the deeper knowing never went away. I knew that ignoring it was no longer an option (another in-the-bones moment), and I listened. When you truly know something in your bones, pushing it aside comes at a cost, and it feels like going against the grain. But if you resist, it remains there, becoming you, and over time, it becomes harder to ignore.

The more I’ve slowed down over the years, the more I’ve been able to recognize it. When I get out of my head and into my body, it becomes easier to feel the difference between a thought and a truth. It often feels calm and clear. And very different from the noise of the mind.

This is where energy becomes so important. When we are operating in a constant state of doing, reacting, and managing, it’s difficult to access this deeper layer of knowing. The mind gets loud, and we start to rely on external input rather than internal clarity.

But when we create space—through stillness, time in nature, or simply pausing long enough to breathe—we begin to notice something else. A different signal. One that isn’t driven by fear, expectation, or conditioning.

It comes from listening within.

Most people don’t talk about this distinction, but once you experience it, you begin to recognize it more and more. You start to see the difference between these two kinds of knowing, and over time, you begin to trust it. It takes practice and distinction.

That’s where the real shift happens and where your most aligned decisions come from.

The other morning, I was awakened by a murder of ravens—yes, that’s actually what a group of ravens is called. And that name seemed appropriate in the moment.

There were 20… maybe 30 of them, shrieking and swooping through our front yard, their energy loud and chaotic enough to pull me out of sleep.

As I looked closer, my husband and I realized what was happening.

They were circling a large owl perched high in one of our pine trees.

My heart sank.

I love owls. There is something about them—their quiet presence, their wisdom, their stillness. They feel sacred to me.

And then, from a nearby tree, I heard another owl call back.

In my mind, they were communicating… strategizing… trying to find a way out.

The contrast was striking—
the gentle, rhythmic coo of the owls against the sharp, aggressive cries of the ravens. It felt unsettling, almost personal. And of course, I took sides. I found myself yelling up at the ravens, as if I could intervene, as if I should.

And then my husband said something simple, but grounding:

“It’s nature, Bronwyn… let it unfold.”

I didn’t like that answer. Everything in me wanted to step in, to protect, to control the outcome—to save my owl. But his words stayed with me.

As I moved through the day, I kept coming back to that moment and his words. It wasn’t just about birds; it was about something much bigger. So I paused and pondered on my nature walk, where wisdom always comes. How often do we see something unfolding in our lives, in others’ lives, in the world—and immediately feel the need to fix it, change it, or protect against it?

We resist what feels uncomfortable.
We try to override the natural course of things.
We insert ourselves where perhaps we are not meant to.

But what if…

There is an intelligence at work that we don’t fully understand.

Nature, when left undisturbed, has a remarkable way of finding balance. Ecosystems self-regulate, and cycles are complete. What appears chaotic in the moment often serves a larger equilibrium over time. And yet, as humans, we often struggle to trust that.

We want a resolution and control.
We want things to unfold according to our sense of what is right. And then I learned something that stopped me. Owls and ravens are not innocent players in a simple story of good versus bad. They are natural enemies. Owls will take over nests and prey on raven eggs, and ravens will fiercely defend and retaliate when they sense that threat.

What I witnessed that morning wasn’t cruelty; it was nature in relationship. In balance. In truth.

And it made me pause.

Because I had immediately assigned roles—protector and villain, right and wrong—based entirely on my own preferences and emotional attachment.

How often do we do that in our own lives?

In our relationships, in our work, and in the way we interpret what’s happening around us.

The truth is rarely as simple as we want it to be.

This is something many spiritual teachings point to in these moments. Not a passive “giving up,” but a deeper allowing and understanding. That requires a willingness to stay present, even when it’s hard, and to witness without immediately reacting. To trust the unfolding, even when we don’t understand it.

This is the shift from automatic reaction to conscious choice.

From control… to trust. From interference… to alignment.

And then there is the owl. A symbol that feels especially meaningful in this moment.

The owl represents wisdom, intuition, and the ability to see what is not immediately visible. It reminds us to trust our inner knowing, even in the dark. It is also a guide through transition and change—moving quietly, gracefully through the unknown. The owl teaches us to look beyond the surface, to find clarity within confusion, and to trust that even in uncertainty, there is deeper intelligence at work.

So perhaps the lesson isn’t to do nothing. But to discern where we are meant to act… and where we are meant to allow.

To recognize when our urge to intervene comes from fear or discomfort rather than truth. To trust that not everything is ours to fix.

That morning, I didn’t save the owl (but it did survive, I knew as I saw it land softly that evening on a tree in our backyard, waiting to start its nightly hunt), but I did receive something else, a quiet reminder that life is constantly unfolding through moments we understand, and many we don’t.

And the real question becomes:

Can we trust it?

What does it actually mean to be open-hearted? It’s a phrase we hear often. It sounds beautiful, soft, even aspirational. But in my experience, being open-hearted is not always gentle or easy.

Sometimes it’s messy.

A writer I love, Sarah Blondin (you can read her Substack here: Sarah Blondin), reminded me of a teaching from Lao Tzu about a glass of muddy water. The question he asked in the Dao was: Who can make the muddy water clear? Most of us assume the answer is to leave it alone and let the mud settle.

But that’s not quite it.

In my own life, and through the guidance of one of my teachers, I’ve come to understand something different. The mud doesn’t just quietly disappear. It has to rise. It has to move. It has to come up to the surface before the water can truly become clear.

And when it rises, it clouds everything.

It gets murky before it gets clear. That’s the part we don’t like and the part we resist.

I remember being on day three of a seven-day silent meditation retreat. My legs were numb. My body was aching. I was gripping through the discomfort, thinking I was getting closer to some version of enlightenment. Instead, what I encountered was the mud, emotions, memories, and discomfort rising to the surface in a way I couldn’t ignore. It wasn’t peaceful. It wasn’t pretty. It was raw.

And that was just the beginning. This pattern has shown up many times in my life, like when I lost a job unexpectedly, I didn’t allow myself to feel the grief or the fear. I went straight to blame. I told stories. I pushed the pain back down.

The mud settled, but it didn’t go away.

Years later, it would resurface in small ways, reminding me it was still there, waiting to be felt and released. Its energy, and that’s the thing about energy:

It stores.
It waits.
It finds its way back if we don’t face it the first time around.

Being open-hearted means allowing ourselves to open to that process. It means letting the mud rise instead of forcing it down. It means feeling the discomfort, the sadness, the anger, the disappointment without trying to fix it, avoid it, or explain it away.

I’ve seen this recently in my own life and work with a project I poured hours into, energy, time, care… fell apart. Completely and unexpectedly. Was I disappointed? Hell yes! But the old version of me, the old pattern, would have been to push through, override the feeling, or make it mean something about me. Instead, I let it dissolve, and I gave myself permission - I felt the disappointment, I let the energy move, and I allowed it to pass through rather than get stuck.

That is open-hearted living. Painful? Yes

I believe there is a misunderstanding with the muddy water teaching. It’s not about letting things settle and pretending everything is fine. It’s about allowing what is stuck to move.

My teacher of the last four years used to say to me, “Bronwyn, you don’t stir the mud. You pour in clean water and allow it to rise and clear.” He said this to me over and over as I relived this pain.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand. Now I do.

The clean water is awareness, presence, truth, and compassion.

As we bring more of that into our lives, the old energy begins to move. And yes, it gets murky for a while. But that’s part of the clearing.

We are living in a time when a lot of mud is rising in the world.

Tension. Fear. Division. Uncertainty.

We can all feel it.

The question is not how to avoid it. The question is how we meet it. Can we allow what is surfacing to be seen and felt? And can we bring in more clarity, more truth, more grounded energy instead of reacting from fear?

Because the energy we bring matters.

Being open-hearted is not about being soft or passive.

It’s about being willing to feel, which is incredibly brave, staying present, and allowing what is true to move through you instead of getting stuck inside you.

This is how things clear up and out.

This is how we lead.

This will be how we heal.

Let’s talk about something that has quietly become common and, in my opinion, needs to stop.

Ghosting.

It originally appeared in the dating world as someone suddenly disappearing without explanation. Messages would go unanswered, calls ignored, and the other person would simply be left hanging, wondering what happened.

Unfortunately, that behavior has now made its way into the professional world.

Emails go unanswered. Messages are ignored. Conversations just stop. Somehow, it has become acceptable to disappear rather than communicate directly.

I understand that people are busy. We all are. Full calendars and overflowing inboxes are part of modern life. But being busy is not an excuse for avoiding communication. A short response takes less than thirty seconds and shows basic respect for the person on the other side.

“No, thank you.”
“Not right now.”
“I’m not interested.”
“This isn’t a fit.”

Clear communication closes the loop and allows everyone to move forward. It’s also taking responsibility.

When someone ghosts you, it leaves a very different impression. Whether intended or not, the message is that the person reaching out was not important enough to warrant a response. It feels dismissive. It feels careless.

Personally, I find it frustrating. I’m a big girl. I can absolutely handle a rejection or a no. That is part of life and part of business. What feels disrespectful is when someone simply disappears and chooses not to respond at all. What has surprised me recently is seeing this happen with people in very senior leadership roles. Titles do not always translate into leadership behavior.

One of the leadership principles I speak about often is taking 100% responsibility. That responsibility includes communication. Leadership is not only about big decisions or inspiring speeches. It is also about the small everyday behaviors that show respect for others.

Responding to someone who has taken the time to reach out is one of those behaviors.

Small actions like this shape culture more than we realize. If we want workplaces and communities that operate with integrity, kindness, and professionalism, it starts with simple acts of courtesy.

Answer the message. Close the loop. Be direct and respectful.

Let’s create a better trend- one built on responsibility, compassion, and basic human decency.

If you’ve been following my Mindful Moments, you know I have a love for words — their meanings, their origins, and the energy they carry. I think that curiosity comes from my dad. He studied Latin in Catholic school back in the 1930s and loved explaining where words came from and how they were built piece by piece. I remember him breaking words down into their roots and describing how language evolved. Ever since then, words have fascinated me.

Over time, I’ve come to believe they carry far more power than we often realize. The words we speak. The words we hear. The words we repeat to ourselves internally.

One of my spiritual teachers recently said something that really stayed with me. He suggested that one day human beings may discover that the words we speak — internally and externally — are even more influential than the food we put into our bodies.

At first, that sounded dramatic, but when I reflected on it, I could see the truth. I felt it yesterday when I found myself in a terrible mood. I felt anxious and unsettled and couldn’t quite pinpoint why. Later, I realized I had spent time reading the news earlier that morning specifically the war and the chaos. Little did I realize the tension and negativity had quietly settled into my body. Not long after, I felt that familiar burning sensation on my upper lip. A cold sore was forming.- stress turning into physical form.

For years, people told me I got cold sores because I spent too much time in the sun. But deep down, I always knew something else was happening. Growing up, they appeared when the tension in our home felt unbearable. Stress had a direct line to my body, and I know for certain that our bodies are talking to us all the time.

Our thoughts and words shape our internal environment far more than we think. And most of the time, we are not even aware of them. Many of us are running internal conversations that were handed to us years ago. Things we heard as children from siblings teasing us, teachers scolding us, parents trying to discipline us, or strangers saying something careless in passing.

We were told the old phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

That may sound good in theory, but anyone who has lived long enough knows words can leave deep marks.

They shape how we see ourselves. They shape how we see others. They shape the energy we bring into our lives and our leadership.

That is why I found this word so beautiful.

Pronoia.

Pronoia is the belief that the universe is conspiring in your favor. It is the sense that life, people, and circumstances are somehow supporting you rather than working against you.

The word comes from the Greek pronoia, meaning forethought or providence. It was introduced into modern psychology by Fred Goldner in the early 1980s.

Pronoia is essentially the positive counterpart to paranoia.

Paranoia assumes harm, betrayal, or threat even when no evidence is present. It often leads to distrust, defensiveness, and hostility.

Pronoia assumes something different. It holds the possibility that life may be unfolding with a kind of quiet intelligence. That the people we meet, the events that occur, and even the challenges we face may be guiding us somewhere meaningful. And when I say “events that occur” I am talking about all events, including the state of the world right now- what if it is happening for us, not against us?

In terms of energy leadership, the difference between these two states is significant. One contracts the mind and body while the other opens them.

When we live from suspicion and fear, we close ourselves off. Our energy becomes guarded and reactive. Our leadership reflects that tension.

When we operate from trust and possibility, our perspective shifts. We listen differently. We interact differently. We lead differently.

This does not mean ignoring reality or pretending that difficult things never happen. It simply means choosing the lens through which we interpret what is happening, even the current chaos we are witnessing. Because when we don’t, it wreaks havoc on our bodies and shows up physically in our nervous system, creating “dis ease” that could turn into real disease.

The lens through which we choose to see the world around us influences everything.

After noticing how quickly my own mood shifted from reading the news, I decided to change the channel of my attention. I put on a piece of music called “Pronoia” by Carly Pearl and let its calm wash over me. It reminded me that the world needs more trust, more kindness, and more thoughtful conversations. More gentleness.

More pronoia.

So today I invite you to experiment with this idea. Notice the words running through your mind. Notice the stories you are telling yourself about what is happening around you.

Then consider another possibility.

Life might not be working against you. It might be working with you. And that shift in perspective can change the energy you bring into every room you enter.

And honestly, given the state of the world, it’s not hard to understand why. There is a lot of uncertainty, a lot of noise, and if we’re willing to call it what it is… a fair amount of chaos.

When we are in that reactive state, our leadership, whether at work, at home, or in our communities, tends to come from reaction rather than intention.

I remember working with a client a few years ago who had just completed the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) assessment. When we reviewed their results, they were furious. And I don’t use that word lightly; they were fuming! They were angry at the assessment, dismissing it as inaccurate and even calling it “dumb.” In truth, they were reacting to what the assessment was showing them. It was acting like a mirror, reflecting patterns they weren’t ready to see. After letting them vent, I said to them, very calmly,

“Your reaction is the result.”

That statement stopped the conversation in its tracks. The assessment itself is neutral information. It isn’t judging. It isn’t punishing. It is simply information that reflects the lens through which you are currently seeing the world and the energy you are bringing to your life and leadership.

What you choose to do with that information is where the power lies.

And the same thing is true with leadership itself.

Leadership is actually quite simple. John C. Maxwell describes it perfectly:

Leadership is influence.

And influence is neutral. But how we influence others is everything. When I teach this concept, I often use two historical examples that illustrate this clearly with two leaders we all know:

1. Adolf Hitler was undeniably influential. He mobilized millions of people. His influence shaped the actions of the entire world. By definition, he was a leader. But how he influenced people led to devastating consequences for humanity, and millions of people suffered and died.

2. Now consider Gandhi. He also influenced millions. He changed the course of India’s future and inspired movements across the world. But how he led was profoundly different. His leadership came from what I call Above-the-Line energy — grounded in vision, compassion, and the greater good.

Both men had influence, but the energy behind their leadership created radically different outcomes. Which brings us back to the most important question any leader can ask:

How am I leading? Am I taking responsibility for the energy I transmit and receive?

Not just what results you’re achieving. How are you inspiring others along the way? Are you leading from fear, pressure, and reaction? Or from awareness, vision, and responsibility?

Slow down with these two questions and get really honest. Often, we can’t see the truth in ourselves, and we need others to reflect it back to us. Because at the end of your life, the results that will matter most won’t just be the goals you hit or the numbers you achieved. It will be the energy you brought and the way you influenced others along the journey.

Today I went for a hike because I was feeling a little ungrounded. A little off. A little lost, if I’m honest. Nothing dramatic, just that subtle inner wobble that happens sometimes when my energy is scattered, and I can’t quite find my center.

So I did what I often do when I need to come back to myself: I got out on the trail. I walked on the earth. I let my feet meet the ground step by step, letting the rhythm of movement guide me back into my body, back into the present moment. As I walked, I started asking inwardly:

Is there any guidance for me right now?
Where do you want me to place my attention?
What am I not seeing clearly?

Then I waited

When I’m feeling lost, I’ve learned something important: I’m never really lost. Not truly. There is always guidance available. There is always a compass. I just have to slow down enough to listen and trust.

And then… at the very end of my hike, as I was walking back toward my car, I spotted something on the trail.

A perfectly sharpened pencil

At first, I was irritated. I assumed someone had dropped it and left trash behind, and I bent down to pick it up, thinking I’d carry it out with me. But then I stopped because instantly, something deeper landed. This wasn’t just a pencil, this was the response to the questions I had just asked! It was a message. The message was simple and clear:

Write.

I love writing. It is one of the places I feel most like myself. And yet, if I’m honest, I’ve been avoiding it lately — especially the book. The moment I think about “writing a book,” it feels heavy, big, overwhelming. There’s a goal attached to it. A pressure. A finish line. And suddenly, the joy of writing gets buried beneath the weight of what I think it has to become. I had been thinking about that very thing on the trail and then, five minutes later, there it was.

A pencil.
A whisper from life.
A nudge.
A reminder.

To Write.

So yes… I’m listening.

And now I’m asking you:

Are you?

Can you slow down enough to really notice what’s showing up around you? The symbols, the synchronicities, the seemingly small things that stir something deeper inside.

Because the truth is, guidance is everywhere, and we are being spoken to all the time.
But when we are rushing, distracted, and stuck in our heads, we miss the secret messages.

You are not lost.
And you are certainly not alone.

There is wisdom all around you, waiting for you to notice.

Maybe today it will come through a conversation.
A bird on your windowsill.
A line in a book.
A pencil on the trail.

The message is there.

The question is…

I want you to really slow down and sit with this question:

How often do you truly play?

And I don’t mean playing in a competitive volleyball league, running a race, or doing anything with a finish line attached. I mean, play for the sheer joy of it. Play with no goal. No outcome. No achievement. No place to get to.

Just pure enjoyment.

When was the last time you did something simply because it lit you up?

Something that brought you into the present moment so fully that time disappeared?

Something that filled your spirit instead of feeding your to-do list?

I came across this question in a book I was reading recently, and at first I thought, Oh yes, my play tank is full. Completely full. Ten out of ten.

But then I slowed down and looked more honestly.

That’s when things got interesting.

Because so much of what I once called “play” had a goal attached to it.

Take running, for example. I have loved running deeply. It has brought me freedom, strength, healing, and some of the most beautiful experiences of my life. But if I’m honest, a lot of my running over the years was tied to something in the future. Getting my PR (personal record) the marathon. Winning the race. Getting sponsored. Running an even LONGER race… and on.

Did I enjoy it? Absolutely.

But there was often still a destination attached to the joy. A push, and that’s not wrong. It’s just worth noticing.

The same thing happens with writing. These Mindful Moments feel playful to me. They flow. They are a joy to write. There’s no pressure, no target, no rigid expectation. It’s a place where I share my thoughts, what I am going through, or learning that may or may not resonate. But when I sit down to write “the book,” I can feel the energy shift. Suddenly, there’s a goal. An outcome. A standard. A finish line. And just like that, the playful energy tightens.

The flow disappears.

This is where mindfulness and energy leadership come in.

Because the question isn’t just what you do.
It’s what energy are you bringing to it?

Are you doing it from joy, curiosity, and presence?
Or from pressure, striving, and needing it to become something?

One fills your tank while the other can quietly drain it, even if it looks fun on the outside.

That’s why I’m wondering lately:

How full is my play tank… really?

What actually brings me into a state of aliveness with no agenda attached?

For me, surfing is one of the clearest examples. Catching a wave, taking that left, feet planted firmly on the board, fully in the moment — that feels like true play. There’s no future in it. No “later.” Just now. Just flow. Just life meeting me right where I am.

And maybe that’s the deeper invitation here.

To notice what helps us enter the now and to pay attention to what restores our energy rather than depletes it. More importantly, to remember that joy matters because it makes us more alive.

In a world that constantly asks us to perform, improve, and produce, play is radical. It softens the nervous system. It reconnects us to presence. It opens the door to creativity, intuition, and flow. It reminds us that life is not only about getting somewhere. Sometimes, it’s about fully being where we are.

So I invite you to pause and ask yourself:

How full is your play tank?
And maybe even more importantly:
What would fill it — not for a result, but for the joy of it?

My life looks drastically different today than it did when I was raising three little ones, working full time, and training for ultramarathons.

Back then, I was in the thick of it — running, quite literally, from one thing to another. I would squeeze in a grocery run during my lunch break, then drive over 100 miles making sales calls, finish my workday, and somehow still lace up my running shoes for five miles before picking up the kids from daycare.

I was busy. Very busy.

At times, I felt like I was drowning, yet there was also a part of me that loved it. Being busy gave me a sense of meaning. Importance. Identity. And if I’m honest, our culture rewards that pace. We are conditioned from a young age to move quickly, achieve more, check the boxes, and keep going.

But there’s something interesting about that frantic pace of doing. It can become a façade. When we are constantly moving, producing, solving, scheduling, and achieving, we rarely have time to slow down enough to ask deeper questions. We don’t have time to really look inward, to examine our choices, or to question the systems we’re operating inside of. Busyness can become one of the most socially accepted distractions.

Today, as I sit at my desk on this quiet snowy afternoon, I find myself in a very different phase of life. My children are grown. The daily responsibility of caring for them has softened into something lighter, more of an advisory role and friendship. It’s sweet and a shift. My work in the world no longer requires the hustle and travel that once defined it. Instead, I can shape my days at a pace that feels aligned with who I am becoming, choose who I want to work with or not, create my own hours, and decide how much energy I put into projects.

Slowing down in this way and creating this kind ot freedom can feel surprisingly uncomfortable and unfamiliar. I fall into old habits of the past. There are days when I catch myself wanting to fill my calendar with meetings, tasks, and projects simply because stillness feels strange. The old conditioning quietly whispers: productivity equals worth.

The ghost of the old pace still visits from time to time. Why? Because we have been trained to be doers. Task masters. Producers. I see it all around me, but I chose not to be there anymore. Instead, I am spending more time going inside in self-discovery- not always easy.

I’m not one to sit on the couch scrolling social media all day — that’s not my nature. My version of slowing down looks different. It means walking in nature to calm my nervous system. Sitting in meditation and breathwork. Writing. Reading. Reflecting. Being with me. And honestly, what I see is that is the biggest fear of all.

For the first time in decades, I’m giving myself the gift of time to get to know myself more deeply. And that process is not always easy. When the noise quiets, things surface. The habit of constant productivity. The discomfort of not knowing what to do next. The subtle addiction to being busy. The part of me that likes drama, to fight, to have conflict in my life. Yes, its true. There is the ugly dark side that is part of us too- that we rarely peek behind the curtain to see. But we need to know all parts of ourselves.

Then the real question becomes: Can I simply be with myself?

Most people avoid that question. Not many people sign up for a silent meditation retreat to sit in silence for a week — truly alone with themselves. No talking. No reading. No writing. No phones. No distractions. Just you and your own mind. It humbling

But the truth is, we are always with ourselves.

From the moment we enter this world until the moment we leave it, we are in relationship with ourselves every single day. Yet many of us spend our lives avoiding that relationship. Maybe because we are afraid of what we might discover, the truth. Maybe because slowing down requires honesty and acceptance.

In this season of my life, I am learning to nurture that relationship with myself. To see clearly the parts I love and don’t love. The parts that still need healing and my attention. To accept the contradictions, the strengths, the imperfections.

To be honest about who I am.

And maybe — just maybe — one of the quiet purposes of life is exactly that.

To truly know ourselves.

Not the roles we play.
Not the productivity we generate.
Not the titles we carry.

But the deeper essence of who we are beneath all of that.

I sometimes imagine looking back thirty years from now and realizing something simple and beautiful. That I am still me. With thirty more years of experience, growth, mistakes, and wisdom, yet the same core essence that has always been here.

Perhaps the real journey of life isn’t becoming someone else. It’s remembering who we’ve always been.

So today I invite you to pause for a moment.

Before you read another word, pause. Take one slow breath. Close the other tabs. Put your phone face down. Let this be a moment of practice, not a moment of multitasking, because this is about presence.

This past weekend, I was at a retreat focused on breathwork and meditation. I always love returning to the seat of the student to not only become more grounded, but also more aware and learn new practices. What struck me most was not any one specific technique. It was the quality of presence in the room. The stillness. The depth of listening. The way people were simply being with one another by the end of our three days together.

One of the practices we did was sitting across from another person, looking into their eyes in complete silence. No talking. No nervous laughter. No explanation. Just being. At first, it felt vulnerable. Almost too intimate. I noticed my impulse to soften it with a smile, to break the silence. But as I stayed, something shifted. My heart softened, and then I could feel her energy. I sensed her tenderness, her strength, even her fear and sadness. I felt only love and understanding. There was no transaction happening. No agenda. Just shared humanity.

It was deeply tender and surprisingly powerful- simply being.

When I came home, I wanted to explore that quality of presence in my own way. So this morning during meditation, I lit a candle and committed to simply being with the flame for thirty minutes. No mantra. No striving or goal. Just presence “Being with.”

If I am honest, I could barely hold my attention on that flame for fifteen seconds.

My mind drifted immediately to meetings I have this week, PowerPoint slides that need refining, emails waiting to be answered, and the quiet hum of productivity whispering that I should be doing something more useful. I would catch myself planning, anticipating, and managing. Then I would gently return to the flame.

Again and again and again. As I sat there, it became clear. If I struggle to stay present with a candle, how often am I not fully present with the people in my life? Yikes!

In the workplace, especially during my years in corporate, I often wanted something from others. A yes. Agreement. A sale. Completion of a task or to get my point across. Even when I was listening, an agenda hummed beneath the surface. I was leaning forward toward an outcome. I was not simply being with them.

How often do we do that at home as well? With our children. With our spouses. Sitting across from someone physically, yet internally rehearsing our next sentence or scanning our phone. We are together, but not truly with each other.

Later that day, I visited my mom. She has advanced Alzheimer’s. We sat outside in the warm sun. There was no meaningful conversation. No long stories. Just the breeze moving through the trees and the quiet sounds around us. I noticed how fully present she was. She is not replaying the past. She is not planning the future. She is simply here.

And something softened in me.

The eye practice at the retreat. The candle flame. Sitting with my mom. They were all pointing to the same truth.

Presence is about allowing.

In leadership, presence changes everything. When you are fully with someone, they feel it. They feel seen. They feel valued. They feel safe enough to lean in. So often, we believe leadership is about strategy, persuasion, or having the right answer. But what if one of the most powerful leadership skills is simply being with another human being without needing something from them? Imagine walking into your next meeting and practicing this. Not scanning for what you can gain, but witnessing. Listening without preparing your response. Seeing the person across from you as fully human. Even virtually, slowing down enough to notice their tone, their posture, their energy.

Perhaps people would trust more. Perhaps collaboration would deepen. Perhaps results would improve not because we pushed harder, but because our energy was no longer grasping or striving.

Presence is simple. But it is not easy.

It requires intention. It requires putting the phone down. It requires noticing when the mind drifts and gently coming back.

So today, I invite you to try something small. In your next conversation, be with the other person as if they were the candle flame. Steady. Worthy of your attention. Nothing to fix. Nothing to extract.

Just being.

And see what shifts.
